Marine Day Japan (海の日)




July 18th is Marine Day for Japan, or Umi no hi (海の日). It was observed for the first time in 1996. The purpose of this holiday is to heighten the Japanese citizens' awareness of the importance of the sea for the Japanese nation. On that day, the national aquariums organize special events, all economic and cultural activities related to the sea are highlighted and competitions and water sports' shows take place.

For Nagoya, Marine Day is celebrated at Nagoya Port. Nagoya Port's Garden Pier and environs host a myriad of events that help citizen in Nagoya to appreciate the ocean. The highlight of the festival is a fireworks display at night time.
