Typhoon approaches south western Japan, 7 dead in Kyushu

TOKYO — A very strong typhoon moved slowly northward off Okinawa Prefecture Saturday and could make landfall on southwestern Japan, possibly on Kyushu, as early as Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Typhoon Shanshan, packing winds of up to 180 kilometers per hour near its center, was located about 50 km southwest of Ishigaki Island, part of Okinawa Prefecture, and was moving north at 15 kph as of 6 a.m. Saturday, the agency said.
