Court to rule on teachers' responsibility to sing anthem

TOKYO — The Tokyo District Court on Thursday will rule on a lawsuit filed by some 400 teachers and librarians requesting the court to recognize that they do not have to sing the Kimigayo national anthem at school events.

The suit was filed against the Tokyo metropolitan government and its education board after they issued a notice in October 2003 demanding public school employees stand up and sing the national anthem in front of the Japanese flag during entrance and graduation ceremonies at schools. The plaintiffs demand the court recognize that the notice is unconstitutional.
